Air defense exercise planned for area east of Colorado Springs today

Western Air Defense Sector Public Affairs

JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash.  –

The Western Air Defense Sector will conduct exercise Felix Hawk 17-03 in the area east of Colorado Springs today, Nov. 1.

Exercise Felix Hawk is designed to test WADS intercept and identification operations with a variety of scenarios involving possible simulated hostile aircraft. Participating aircraft flights are scheduled to take place between approximately 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. (MST).

In the event of inclement weather the exercise will be canceled.

This exercise comprises a series of training flights held in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration; Continental, U.S. North American Aerospace Defense Command Region (CONR); and WADS.

These exercises are carefully planned and closely controlled to ensure WADS’s rapid response capability. WADS have conducted exercise flights of this nature throughout the western region since the start of Operation Noble Eagle, the command’s response to the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Since Sept. 11, 2001, CONR fighters have responded to more than 5,000 possible air threats in the United States and have flown approximately 68,000 sorties with the support of Airborne Warning and Control System and air-to-air-refueling aircraft.
