NORAD to protect the skies over Super Bowl LIII

NORAD Public Affairs

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.  –   North American Aerospace Defence Command, in support of its interagency partners, will be protecting the skies around Mercedez-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA leading up to Super Bowl Sunday, February 3, 2019.

NORAD fighter aircraft and aircrews will enforce the Federal Aviation Administration’s temporary flight-restricted zone during Sunday’s big game.

“The men and women of NORAD are working alongside FAA, Department of Homeland Security, and law enforcement agencies to defend the homeland and protect its people,” said General Terrence O’Shaughnessy, Commander NORAD. “The activities and coordination we are conducting for the Super Bowl is what NORAD does year round to defend the air space of Canada and the U.S. from airborne threats.”

NORAD is responsible for detecting, deterring, defending and if necessary, defeating any aviation threat to the United States and Canada. NORAD’s support to the Super Bowl has occurred annually since 2002.

Defense of the homelands is NORAD's top priority. NORAD is on alert around the clock, every day. For 60 years, NORAD aircraft have identified and intercepted potential air threats to North America in the execution of its aerospace warning, aerospace control and maritime warning missions.
