OVER THE GULF OF MEXICO - An F-16 fighter from the 138th Fighter Wing, Detachment 1, breaks off from a Canadian CC-150 following an Amalgam Mute exercise March 15. The North American Aerospace Defense Command Inspector General's Office conducts periodic inspections of NORAD's alert units, testing their ability to employ and control fighters in a variety of scenarios. In the inspection scenario, fighters had to enforce a temporary flight restriction and then respond to a simulated distress call from a Canadian CC-150 reporting a disturbance in the cockpit.
