OVER THE GULF OF MEXICO - Air Force Col. Andy Morgan, North American Aerospace Defense Command Inspector General, listens to the radio communications between the pilot of the Canadian CC-150 simulating a target of interest and an F-16 from the 138th Fighter Wing's Detachment 1 flying on the aircraft's left side during an Amalgam Mute inspection of the wing's ability to conduct the NORAD alert mission. The CC-150, a Canadian military version of the popular Airbus A-310, played the role of a commercial airliner in the midst of a disturbance in the cockpit. An Amalgam Mute is a no-notice inspection of the entire alert facility including the unit's abilities to employ, control, maintain and reconstitute alert aircraft.
