PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. – Six members of the North American Aerospace Defense Command Nijmegen March team set out for a short training march with NORAD and U.S. Northern Command commander, Air Force Gen. Gene Renuart May 11. The NORAD team consists of 11 people, seven Canadians and four Americans, from the Alaskan NORAD Region, Continental U.S. NORAD Region, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Vandenberg AFB, Calif. The Nijmegen March is a four-day, 160 kilometer march (at 40 km per day) held annually that traces its roots to 1909. Held by the Dutch in an effort to keep their people fit in the age of “horseless carriages,” the march has only be cancelled twice, during the World Wars. This year, Canada is fielding 15 teams, one of which was allocated to NORAD. The march will be held July 20 – 23.
