PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. - NORAD’s hockey team beat Canadian Forces Base Suffield 7-1 in the final game of the 2013 Annual Canadian Forces Prairie Region Small Base Hockey Championship Feb. 7.
The NORAD team, drawing from units across North America, beat the rival team from Suffield in front of a packed house on Suffield’s own ice.
A 5-3 defeat at the hands of Suffield earlier in the championships put NORAD’s future in doubt, but after beating Yellowknife in the quarter and semi-finals, NORAD found themselves facing Suffield again in the championship game for a rematch.
NORAD had to overcome a disadvantage the other teams didn’t have. Drawing members from six bases in two countries, the team didn’t have time to even practice together before playing their first game. Despite this, the team was quick to gel and were a cohesive unit by the time they faced Suffield, said Canadian Capt. Gregory Wallace. In the end, he said, NORAD just wanted it more.
“The Suffield team fought hard, but we fought harder,” Wallace said. “We were hungrier for the win, to right the wrong from earlier.”
