NORAD continues to conduct flight operations from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport

Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida  –

U.S. Air Force F-15 fighter aircraft, under the direction of its Continental U.S. NORAD Region (CONR), will conduct air defense operations Friday and Saturday from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Florida.

This week's temporary bed down at the airport is designed to enhance NORAD's response capabilities to enforce the Federal Aviation Administration's Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) over Palm Beach, Florida.

Residents in the area can expect to see F-15s around the Fort Lauderdale area and supporting crews at the airport for the duration of the TFR mission.

Flights will occur at unannounced times during the day or night and could impact general aviation and commercial flight activity in the area. NORAD will continue to provide updates as changes occur.

These flights are closely coordinated with the FAA and CONR's Eastern Air Defense Sector. NORAD has conducted flight operations throughout the U.S. and Canada since the start of Operation Noble Eagle, the command’s response to the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

As the continental United States geographical component of the bi-national command NORAD, CONR provides airspace surveillance and control, and directs air sovereignty and air defense activities for the CONUS region. CONR and its assigned Air Force and Army assets throughout the country ensure air safety and security against potential air threats.

Since Sept. 11, 2001, CONR fighters have responded to more than 6,000 possible air threats in the United States and have flown approximately 68,000 sorties with the support of Airborne Warning and Control System and air-to-air-refueling aircraft.
