NORAD Response to Air Incident in Washington, D.C.

By NORAD and USNORTHCOM Public Affairs

NORAD responded to a general aviation Cessna aircraft that violated the Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) over Washington, D.C., today. Two F-16s scrambled from Andrews Air Force Base, Md., and intercepted the aircraft. The fighters dropped four flares within restricted airspace to get the pilot's attention and then escorted the aircraft out of the ADIZ to a local airport in Frederick, Md. The F-16s then returned to their base.
