NORAD, USNORTHCOM release Vision 2020
PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The commander of North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command has signed a document that provides strategic guidance and direction for the commands as they move toward the year 2020.
Gen. Gene Renuart and other key personnel in the commands developed Vision 2020 to help NORAD and USNORTHCOM anticipate and prepare for future threats to the Canadian and American homelands.
"Vision 2020 guides our staff and all subordinate elements and serves as the basis for future priorities and resource allocation," Renuart said. "Defending our homelands constitutes more than protecting physical boundaries and maintaining territorial integrity. Our commands' active defense also secures the democratic principles, beliefs and ways of life embraced by our citizens."
Strategic goals laid out for NORAD and USNORTHCOM in Vision 2020 include:
• Empower people, processes, organizational structures and relationships to effectively defend North America
• Be a model for international cooperation in defense planning, execution, training, information management and technological innovation
• Provide timely and effective civil support
NORAD, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary next May, is the bi-national Canadian and American command that is responsible for the air defense of North America and maritime warning. USNORTHCOM, which celebrated its fifth anniversary Oct. 1, is the unified combatant command responsible for defending the homeland and providing defense support of civil authorities.
