Major General Richard Gallant is the Chief of Staff, North American Aerospace Defense Command and United States Northern Command, Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado.

NORAD is a bi-national, United States and Canadian organization charged with the missions of aerospace warning, aerospace control, and maritime warning for North America. As the NORAD Chief of Staff, he directs a joint and bi-national staff to coordinate command responsibilities for its area of responsibility.

As the USNORTHCOM Chief of Staff, he directs a joint staff in order to deter, prevent and defeat threats and aggression aimed at the United States and its territories and interests within USNORTHCOM’s assigned areas of responsibility. Additional duties involve coordinating and directing military assistance to civil authorities, including civil support and consequence management operations when authorized by the Secretary of Defense or President of the United States.

Prior to assuming his current position, he was the Commanding General for Joint Task Force Civil Support, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia. He was responsible for leading the nation’s only standing, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear joint task force located at more than 36 locations throughout the nation in support of civil authority response operations.

Major General Gallant was commissioned as a second lieutenant of Infantry through the Officer Candidate School at the Massachusetts Military Academy in 1982. He served in a variety of command and staff positions in the 53d Infantry Brigade Combat Team. He also commanded the 2nd Battalion 124 Infantry Regiment, and deployed the unit in 2003 in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

While deployed, he also served as the senior mentor to the 1st Brigade of the Afghan National Army and as the commander of the 1st Brigade Embedded Training Team. He deployed again in 2010 in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM and Operation NEW DAWN as commander of the 53d Infantry Brigade Combat Team, which performed combat operations as the Army Central Command Security Force Brigade. Major General Gallant has commanded at the Battalion, Brigade, and JTF level in support of several hurricanes and civil support operations.

From 2013 to 2015, Major General Gallant served as Deputy Director of Operations, Headquarters, United States Northern Command, Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, as the principal advisor to the commander on all operational matters in the area of defense support of civil authorities. He is an operationally qualified dual-status commander. In 2012, he commanded JTF Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida and was the Chief, National Guard Bureau liaison to Operation SANDY at JB McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey.

Major General Gallant and his wife Carol have raised a proud military family for over three decades. Their son Russell served 10 years in the Army, achieving the rank of staff sergeant. He now lives in Fort Worth, Texas with his wife Krista and for children: Ryan, Laurie, Evalee, and Ally. Their daughter Rebecca was a first lieutenant who served eight years in the Florida National Guard. She is now a financial advisor in Tampa, Florida with her husband WO2 Keith Norman, a CH-47 pilot. Their younger daughter Michelle is a two-time national finalist Military Child of the Year and is now a Dean’s List student at the University of Central Florida. Carol, a retired certified financial planner, is also a trained key spouse mentor and a consultant of Military One Source. They will eventually settle in Penhook, Virginia, where they have a home.
