PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. – Nick Nickel, U.S. Northern Command Operations Directorate, gives a presentation on Operation Eagle Claw, the disastrous 1980 attempt to free the hostages held in Tehran, Iran, April 28. Nickel was one of the operators assigned to Operation Eagle Claw. Eight servicemembers were killed and two of the mission aircraft destroyed when one of the helicopters assigned to the mission crashed into a C-130. Although a failure, the mission is credited with sparking the Department of Defense to invest in improving joint planning, communications, integration and operations.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Panel members take questions during the NORAD and USNORTHCOM Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Conference at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort in Colorado Springs, Colo., April 5. Sgt. John Mutu, front row center with black ball cap, is surprised for his 90th birthday April 4 on Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station by 25 former
colleagues and family members. The group, which worked together in the
Communication Squadron, shared stories of the "good old days," toured the
air station and noted some of the remarkable changes to their former
workstation. Mr. Mutu's former colleagues, who came from Colorado, Texas,
and Ohio, worked on CMAFS during the 1970s. Mr. Mutu had a long
distinguished career in the U.S. Air Force, but said some of his most fond
memories were of working in a special place like CMAFS.

The CC-150, a Canadian military version of the popular Airbus A-310, played the role of a commercial airliner in the midst of a disturbance in the cockpit. An Amalgam Mute is a no-notice inspection of the entire alert facility including the unit's abilities to employ, control, maintain and reconstitute alert aircraft.

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. - Navy Adm. James Winnefeld, North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command commander, escorts members of the Canadian Embassy and consulates to NORAD and USNORTHCOM headquarters at the beginning of a visit to the commands Feb. 15. The purpose of the visit was to educate the members of the Canadian Consulate Heads of Mission about the missions of NORAD as well as those assumed by USNORTHCOM after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in connection with homeland defense. More than 20 Embassy and consulate staff members received briefings on the NORAD and USNORTHCOM missions and tours of the NORAD and USNORTHCOM Command Center and Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station.

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. - Canadian Master Cpl. John Bowden, 407 Long Range Patrol Squadron Airborne Electronic Sensor Operator, shows Canadian Maj. Brian Martin, North American Aerospace Defense Command Public Affairs, the Electro-Optical Infrared Sensor station on board a CP-140 Aurora patrol aircraft on the Peterson AFB flight line Jan. 18. The "Demons" of 407 Squadron flew to Peterson AFB as part of pilot upgrade training and took the opportunity to visit Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station and learn more about how their crew impacts the NORAD maritime warning mission. The CP-140 is a maritime patrol craft, and the 407 Squadron is responsible for patrolling for ships and submarines in the northern Pacific Ocean.
